MEDIA RELEASE

7th JUNE 2012

SHINE OF COLGATE HAS BEEN BLACKENED BY COALGATE

WE ONLY READ ABOUT COALGATE FROM NEWSPAPERS AND PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS THAT THIS IS A SCAM. NO ONE HAS EVEN BOTHERED TO CHECK THE QUALITY OF COAL IMPORTS AND THE SUFFERING OF THE VARIOUS POWER GENERATION UNITS.

OVER THE LAST 10YEARS INDIA HAS EMERGED AS THE LARGEST COAL IMPORTER IN THE WORLD AND MAJOR IMPORTS ARE FROM INDONESIA, AUSTRALIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND USA. MOST OF THE POWER UTILITIES USE IMPORTED INDONESIAN COAL WHICH IS AVAILABLE FROM 5300GCV TO 6000GCV AND FORMS THE BULK OF IMPORTS BY NTPC AND THE STATE POWER CORPORATIONS.

MAJOR PLAYERS ARE ADANI AND A FEW OF THE OTHER CORPORATES WHO ARE SUPPLYING TO THE VARIOUS POWER PRODUCERS. THE BULK OF THE COAL BEING IMPORTED IS SUBSTANDARD AND HIGH IN MOISTURE RESULTING IN LOW OUTPUT FOR THE POWER PRODUCERS BUT DUE TO THE STRONG POLITICAL BACKING AND CONNECTION NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN. WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT NOT INSTITUTE A CBI ENQUIRY INTO THIS COAL IMPORTS WHICH WILL SHAME THE COALGATE SCAM BY A HUGE MARGIN.

EVERY STATE ELECTRICITY BOARD ISSUES TENDER COMPLYING WITH STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE OF THE GOVERNMENT BUT AFTER TENDER ALL RULES ARE THROWN TO THE WIND AND THEY ARE FORCED TO ACCEPT WHATEVER COAL THEY RECEIVE. DOCUMENTS ARE PERFECTED AND REPORTS MANIPULATED TO SHOW THE IMPORTS MATCHING WITH TENDER. BUT WHEN NTHE COAL ARRIVES IN THE POWER PLANTS THEY ARE LOW CALORIFIC VALUE THAN WHAT WAS TENDERED AND ALSO HAVE FAR HIGH MOISTURE. IN SOME CASES TENDER FOR SOUTH AFRICAN CARGO IS REPLACED BY LOW QUALITY INDONESIAN CARGO.

WE WOULD REQUEST THE GOVERNMENT TO OPEN THEIR EYES TO THIS COALGATE UNLESS IT IS RESIGNED TO THE FATE OF ANOTHER SCAM BREWING IN THEIR BACKYARD.
